During the Netflix special, “The Roast of Tom Brady,” the retired NFL quarterback didn’t hesitate to address one of the few stains on his illustrious career: Deflategate, the infamous scandal following the 2014 AFC championship game that led to a four-game suspension.
Brady took the stage and immediately cracked a few jokes about the controversy. “Where’s Roger Goodell?” he quipped, fully aware that the NFL commissioner wasn’t present. “Remember Deflategate? The NFL spent $20 million and concluded it was ‘probable’ I was ‘generally’ aware someone may have deflated my footballs. You could have just given me the $20 million, and I would’ve told you I f–king did it.”
Former Patriots coach Bill Belichick was among those who gave the joke a standing ovation.

Hosted by comedian Kevin Hart, the roast featured appearances from Belichick and former teammates Julian Edelman, Randy Moss, and Rob Gronkowski. Highlights included Brady’s witty comebacks to the roasters and Belichick’s playful jabs at quarterback Drew Bledsoe and teasing Gronkowski about his broadcasting career.
Following the roast, Brady’s next TV appearance could be in Week 1 of the upcoming 2024 NFL season, as he starts his stint as FOX Sports’s lead color commentator alongside play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt.
