The New England Patriots are charting a new course post-Bill Belichick, signaling a definitive move away from the iconic coach’s era.
Belichick, who concluded his tenure with the team after a challenging four-win season in 2023, has been succeeded by Jerod Mayo. Under Mayo’s leadership, there’s a fresh cultural and strategic shift unfolding within the organization.
NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported significant changes at the Patriots’ Gillette Stadium, noting the removal of many Belichick-era phrases and slogans. Previously, the hallways were adorned with signs bearing “The Patriot Way” and “Do Your Job.” These have now been replaced with new mottos such as “We not me,” “Hard work works,” and “Process, Progress, Payoff,” which Mayo has embraced as themes for his inaugural season.
Another new slogan, “When we win we win together,” was inspired by offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and has been adopted widely across the team’s facilities after Mayo encouraged his coaching staff to contribute their ideas. This phrase now features prominently in every meeting room.
In collaboration with Robin Glaser, the Patriots’ vice president of football business and senior advisor to the head coach, Mayo has been instrumental in redefining the team’s visual identity, part of broader renovations at the stadium.
A notable addition to the facility is a mural by artist Rob “ProBlak” Gibbs, depicting a young black child in a football uniform looking up at Mayo and other Patriots legends, symbolizing the team’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“Diversity matters on our staff, Black and white, young and old, former players and non-players. Players’ mental health matters. Relationships with players matter,” Mayo said. “People matter. What you stand for matters. You have to work at it and build it.”
While the slogans from the Belichick era are no longer present, the team continues to honor the legacy of the coach who led them to six Super Bowl victories. According to Wolfe, Belichick’s portrait has been placed on a wall alongside other notable coaches, executives, and scouts who have made significant contributions to the Patriots’ storied history.
