Charles Barkley could soon become one of the most sought-after free agents in sports media, a development that would likely significantly boost his financial prospects.
With TNT and ESPN’s current NBA media rights agreements expiring after the 2024-25 season, Barkley, who recently signed a 10-year contract with TNT’s “Inside the NBA” in 2022, could be in a pivotal position. Despite this long-term contract, the 61-year-old disclosed this week that his contract includes an opt-out clause that allows him to leave if TNT’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, fails to retain its NBA rights.
Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports has speculated that if Barkley were to switch networks or join a streaming service after next season, he could command annual offers around $20 million.
Comparing Barkley’s potential market value, one source told McCarthy:
“If Tony Romo is worth $17 million, Charles is worth at least that, or more. Charles is a magnet. He’s loved. And he brings ratings.”
Though Barkley has expressed his enjoyment working at TNT, it’s important to note that his current contract reportedly amounts to $100 million over 10 years. If McCarthy’s projections hold true, Barkley could see a significant pay raise should TNT decide to step back from NBA broadcasting.
While ESPN is expected to renew its NBA deal, the real uncertainty lies with whether TNT will counter NBC’s likely substantial bid.
Two years ago, Barkley mentioned plans to retire from television after the 2023-24 season. However, with the potential for a doubled salary in the near future, his departure from the screen seems increasingly unlikely.
