In a recent interview with “Good Morning America,” WNBA star Brittney Griner shared harrowing details of her 2022 imprisonment in Russia.
Griner described the deplorable conditions she faced at Correctional Colony No. 1, including being given a mattress with a “huge bloodstain” and only two thin sheets for bedding. “The mattress had a huge bloodstain, and they give you these thin two sheets, so you’re basically laying on bars,” Griner recounted.
The Phoenix Mercury player also highlighted the physical risks associated with her confinement, explaining the danger of extending limbs through the cell bars. “From the middle of my shin to my feet stuck through the bars, which in prison, you really don’t want to stick your leg and arm through bars because someone could go up and grab it, break it, twist it and that’s what was going through my mind,” she said.

Griner further revealed the scarcity of basic necessities, being allocated only one roll of toilet paper per month, sometimes going two to three months without any. Additionally, the toothpaste provided to her had expired 15 years prior and was more effective for cleaning mold off the walls than for dental hygiene.
Griner’s ordeal ended in December 2022 when she was released as part of a prisoner swap with Russia.
