For the first time in nearly two decades, a team has clinched the Super Bowl title in consecutive seasons, and sports commentator Colin Cowherd suggests the Kansas City Chiefs might be poised for a third consecutive championship.
On a recent episode of “The Herd,” Cowherd analyzed the NFL landscape following recent drafts and free agency moves. He identified only eight teams he believes have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl next season.
Cowherd’s “Super Bowl bubble” includes six teams he views as top contenders, provided they maintain good health and favorable conditions. These teams are the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, and Detroit Lions.
Additionally, Cowherd considers the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals as teams with a potential, albeit lower, chance of winning. His confidence in the top six, however, is stronger due to their more complete setups.
Notably, except for the Bengals—who lost their playoff chance last season due to Joe Burrow’s injury—all of Cowherd’s favored teams reached the playoffs last year. With Burrow returning, Cowherd believes Cincinnati should not be underestimated.
According to Cowherd, the key to predicting Super Bowl contenders lies in assessing the teams’ quarterbacks and coaches, a strategy that has proven successful for teams like the Patriots and Chiefs in recent years.
His list includes prominent quarterbacks such as Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford, Lamar Jackson, and Jordan Love. However, he excluded teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and Houston Texans from his top picks, pointing to possible doubts about their quarterbacks or coaching staff.
As the NFL season progresses into the colder months, it remains to be seen how Cowherd’s predictions will hold up against the reality of the game.
