Charles Barkley stirred up controversy last week with his remarks about Galveston, Texas, following the New Orleans Pelicans’ loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In NBA culture, the phrase “going to Cancun” symbolizes the end of a team’s season. However, Barkley suggested an alternative destination for the Pelicans, expressing his disappointment with their performance.
“We’re not even gonna send them to Cancun. We’re gonna send them to Galveston, where that dirty-a– water be washed up on the shore,” Barkley commented. He elaborated further, “We sending their ass to Galveston, Texas, right where that dirty water washed up on the beach, they can’t even get in the water.”
In response, Galveston’s tourism board took to Instagram to address Barkley’s comments with a touch of humor and disappointment. “Charles Barkley, here I was thinking we were cool, and then you go throwing shade like we’re strangers. What’s up with that?” read their post.

Barkley is no stranger to poking fun at cities; he has been known for his ongoing jokes about San Antonio and its residents for over a decade. He even compared the two Texas cities unfavorably: “Oh hell no. I’d rather go to San Antonio. I’d rather go to San Antonio with those big old women,” he said, continuing his controversial brand of humor.
Barkley’s critical comments about mid-sized Texan cities have become a recurring theme, with compilation videos of his jokes about San Antonio running longer than 15 minutes.
