Charles Barkley is unsparing in his criticism of the New Orleans Pelicans following their latest playoff defeat.
The Pelicans were bested 106-85 by the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series, which took place on Saturday at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. This loss put the Pelicans at a daunting 3-0 series deficit, and Barkley has all but written them off.
Not only does Barkley think it’s time for the Pelicans to pack up for the season, he also suggests they don’t even merit the usual playful suggestion of a vacation to Cancun. Instead, he humorously proposes a less glamorous destination—Galveston, Texas.

“We’re not even going to send ’em to Cancun. We’re gonna send ’em to Galveston with that dirty water washing up on the shore. People think they’re at the beach… Y’all quit. Drive your a– down to Galveston,” Barkley quipped.
This comment plays into the TNT crew’s humorous tradition of saying a team has gone “Gone Fishin’” following their playoff elimination, typically implying a leisurely trip to Cancun. However, Barkley felt the Pelicans’ performance was so lacking that they didn’t deserve the usual mock reward, suggesting Galveston instead as a tongue-in-cheek downgrade.
Barkley’s jest, though sharp, is all in good fun, reflecting his role as a charismatic and often provocative sports commentator.
