We’ve got drama.
Quarterback Kirk Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons this offseason and certainly wasn’t expecting his new team to use their eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft on a quarterback.
However, that is exactly what happened when they selected Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round.
Video of Falcons GM Terry Fontenot explaining the pick to Falcon owner Arthur Blank has now made the rounds on social media.

According to reports, Cousins isn’t too happy about the draft selection by the Falcons.
This from MLFootball on X via ESPN:
“Kirk Cousins and his camp are FRUSTRATED and confused by the #Falcons picking Michael Penix Jr, as they didn’t use that pick to help the team in 2024, per ESPN They are unhappy that they picked Kirk’s replacement before he ever played a snap there”
According to Cousin’s agent, the veteran quarterback had no idea that his potential successor was going to be drafted this year.
This from ESPN’s Pete Thamel on X:
“Spoke to Mike McCartney, the agent for Kirk Cousins. He said the only heads up the Falcons gave Cousins about picking Michael Penix was a call while the team was on the clock. He’d just signed a four-year deal for $180 million, the first two of which are fully guaranteed.”
It sounds like the Falcons will now have some explaining to do to Kirk Cousins.
