Stephen A. Smith stirred controversy with his remarks on Fox News’ “The Sean Hannity Show,” where he suggested that some Black Americans might relate to Donald Trump feeling discriminated against.
His comments quickly went viral and drew criticism from the NAACP.
In response to a video of Smith’s remarks shared by the X account “Republicans against Trump,” the NAACP tweeted with the hashtag #BLASPHEMOUS, challenging Smith’s comparison by listing Trump’s legal and political controversies.
Smith responded to the NAACP’s criticism, defending his statements: “This is absolutely, positively sad that you — @NAACP — would misrepresent my comments like this. I was asked what Blacks WHO SUPPORT TRUMP are thinking as to why they support him. I answered THAT question. Sad! But you’re entitled. Good luck. Maybe that will beat Trump, since little else seems to be working — which was my overall point. We shall see.”

Despite his past support for President Joe Biden in the upcoming 2024 election, Smith has engaged with a broad political spectrum, frequently appearing on Fox News and discussing politics with figures like Clay Travis.
He has even encouraged his followers to support Chris Christie.
On “The Sean Hannity Show,” Smith elaborated on his previous comments about Trump’s appeal, saying, “As much as people may have been abhorred by Donald Trump’s statement weeks ago talking about how Black folks, he’s hearing that Black folks find him relatable because of what he is going through is similar to what Black Americans have gone through, he wasn’t lying! He was telling the truth.”
While Smith does not support Trump, whom he has labeled as “dangerous,” he has been vocal in criticizing the trial against the former president in New York, describing it on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” as a “disaster” and “much ado about nothing.”
