Dallas mayor Eric Johnson wants the Kansas City Chiefs to return to Dallas, Texas.
Voters in Jackson County, Missouri, rejected a proposal to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs and construct a new stadium for the Kansas City Royals.
Mayor Johnson shared an article discussing the implications of the vote for the Chiefs’ future, accompanied by a playful remark: “Welcome home, Dallas Texans!” He also included the hashtag #CottonBowl in the post.
Mayor Johnson also reportedly issued the following statement to the Dallas Morning News:
“As I have said previously, our market is big enough, growing enough, and loves football more than enough to support a second NFL team… especially a franchise with deep roots here.”
Mayor Johnson’s comment “Welcome home, Dallas Texans!” could be interpreted as a playful suggestion that the Chiefs could potentially return to their roots in Dallas.
The team was founded in 1959 team’s history as the Dallas Texans before relocating to Kansas City.
Mayor Johnson proposed that the potential new team could join the AFC and play in South Dallas.
Adding to the intrigue, Clark Hunt, the chairman and CEO of the Chiefs, resides in Dallas and has significant connections to the city.
The Cotton Bowl is undergoing significant renovations worth $140 million, marking the largest investment in the fairgrounds’ 137-year history which is presumably where a new Dallas professional football team would play.
Despite the rejection of renovation plans for the Chiefs’ stadium, it is highly improbable that the reigning Super Bowl champions would relocate entirely from Kansas City.
