Former NFL star Braylon Edwards demonstrated heroism when he rescued an 80-year-old man from a potentially fatal attack in a locker room incident in Michigan on Friday.
Edwards, renowned for his college football career with the Michigan Wolverines and subsequent tenure with teams like the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, was at a YMCA in the Farmington Hills area when he heard a disturbance inside the locker room.
Describing the events, Edwards recounted, “I walk into the locker room after work, and basically, I hear about four rows behind me arguing about music and how it was being played too loud.” Initially minding his own business, Edwards became alert when the situation escalated into physical altercation sounds.
Upon turning around, Edwards discovered a 25-year-old man assaulting the elderly individual. Reacting swiftly, Edwards intervened just as the attacker was about to inflict further harm on the elderly man.
Edwards described how he prevented the assailant from slamming the victim’s head onto a counter, potentially saving the victim’s life.
Later, police confirmed that Edwards’ timely intervention likely prevented a tragic outcome for the elderly man. Reflecting on the incident, Edwards expressed gratitude for being able to help, stating, “But at the end of the day that’s what you do.”
Law enforcement arrested the 25-year-old attacker as he attempted to flee the scene, and he remains in custody.
Edwards, known for his stellar college career with the Wolverines where he became the first receiver in Big Ten Conference history to achieve three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, enjoyed a notable NFL career with the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks before retiring.
