The Chicago Bears face a pivotal decision at quarterback this offseason, with speculation suggesting they may select USC’s Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft.
While this possibility seems increasingly likely, not everyone supports the idea of the Bears potentially parting ways with Justin Fields in favor of drafting Williams.
Former NFL fullback and analyst Merril Hoge recently shared his perspective on Chicago’s quarterback situation. He strongly advocates for retaining Fields, citing the young quarterback’s need for more experience and his demonstrated potential in the NFL. Hoge believes that given the right support and time, Fields can develop into a successful player in the league.

Hoge’s critique of Williams is equally pointed, as he perceives nothing particularly exceptional about the USC standout’s game. Now turning his attention to UNC’s Drake Maye, Hoge voices skepticism about Maye’s first-round draft potential.
“UNC’s Drake Maye is NOT a 1st round pick,” Hoge asserts. “I would not touch Maye.”
According to Hoge, Maye exhibits inconsistency in his play, struggles with processing, lacks significant athleticism, and possesses a longer throwing motion that increases the risk of interceptions.
While Hoge’s opinions are based on his observations, it remains to be seen how accurate his assessments will prove to be. Nonetheless, it’s evident that Hoge, a former NFL player, maintains high standards and requires substantial evidence to be impressed.
