Former ESPN columnist Jason Whitlock has declared the Ravens’ AFC Championship loss to the Chiefs as ‘the greatest choke job in the history of the NFL,’ just a week after confidently stating that Kansas City had no chance of winning.
Despite being a Chiefs fan, Whitlock had predicted a ’14-17 point game’ in favor of the Ravens, believing they would exploit the Chiefs’ defense. However, the game unfolded differently, with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens struggling.
‘I think the offensive coaches – the ”all black quarterback room” – decided, ”Hey we’re going to out pass Patrick Mahomes. We’re going to come out of our identity and we’re going to go throw for throw with Patrick Mahomes.”

Whitlock criticized the Ravens’ decision to deviate from their identity and attempt to out-pass Patrick Mahomes, deeming it a ‘dumb strategy’ that may have cost them their best chance at reaching the Super Bowl. Whitlock expressed concern that this loss could impact Lamar Jackson’s career.
Despite Jackson’s efforts, including a 34-10 win against Houston, his postseason record is now 2-4, and he is yet to make a Super Bowl appearance.
I would argue that the Falcons still retain the title for the most significant choke job in NFL history.
