Earlier this month, Jedd Fisch made the decision to leave Arizona for Washington, stepping into the role previously held by Kalen DeBoer, who had moved on to the Alabama job.
While Fisch had established a positive situation in Arizona, the opportunity at Washington proved too enticing to pass up.
Predictably, Arizona did not take the departure well. A notable Arizona booster expressed his displeasure in a leaked text message, “You could have been a legend here at Arizona had you stayed. I went out of my way to make sure you didn’t get our best players. I don’t ever wish anyone bad luck and you are the first one. You disappointed me. I thought we were friends,” conveyed Humberto Lopez.
While it’s understandable that Arizona boosters would be upset by the decision, the nature of collegiate sports often involves business decisions. The leaked text highlights the emotional investment that some boosters have in the program, expecting a personal connection with the head coach.
However, the reality is that these relationships are typically business-oriented, with boosters seeking a sense of involvement in the team.
