Ryan Rollins, a former guard for the Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors, is facing allegations of recurrent shoplifting incidents at Target.
On Monday, the Wizards waived the second-year guard, initially seeming like a routine roster move for a team in the midst of rebuilding. However, documents from the Alexandria General District Court, obtained by The Athletic’s Josh Robbins, disclosed that Rollins is accused of shoplifting from a Target store on seven separate occasions between Sept. 9 and Nov. 9 while still a member of the Wizards. The charges include seven counts of petit larceny for stealing items such as groceries, body wash, and candles.
Despite the alleged offenses occurring months prior to his release, Wizards president Michael Winger stated that the team had only recently become aware of the charges. Winger refrained from confirming if Rollins’ release was specifically related to the Class 1 misdemeanor, stating, “We cannot comment on that matter, or the basis for our roster decisions. We do take our role very seriously as citizens of the DMV, representatives of our fans, and a team our community can be proud of. These are expectations, not aspirations.”

Rollins joined the Wizards through the Jordan Poole trade, which sent Chris Paul to the Warriors. The Toledo alum demonstrated promise during the 2023 Summer League with the Wizards, averaging 14.0 points, 5.0 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game in four appearances. He was also in the second year of a team-friendly 3-year contract.
The decision to part ways with Rollins midseason is surprising for a Wizards team in the early stages of rebuilding, raising questions about potential reasons beyond basketball. Rollins had averaged 4.1 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 10 games played before his release, featuring in just 2 of Washington’s last 23 games.
