The football world was taken by surprise when the Kansas City Chiefs announced that tight end Travis Kelce would not be playing in Week 18.
Earlier in the week, there were indications that he would take the field, aiming to maintain his streak of seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Kelce needed just 16 yards to surpass that milestone again this season.
However, Kelce chose to finish the regular season on the bench, and head coach Andy Reid explained to Ed Easton of USA Today that it was entirely Kelce’s decision.
Reid stated, “He is a humble, humble guy. It’s different because of the financial part of it, with Chris [Jones]. [Kelce] didn’t want to be selfish or come across as selfish. All the players want him to play, but he just goes, ‘You know what? I don’t like the way it feels.’”
“He’s not into that. He chose not to play, and I completely understand it. But that’s him. Most guys would have gone out and probably done it, but he said, ‘I’ve got a lot of records on this one here; I’m not going to do it this way.’”

Considering the Chiefs were already secured in the No. 3 seed in the AFC, the game held no significance for them. Now, with a rested squad, they will face the Miami Dolphins in extremely cold temperatures.
As Kelce advances in his career, his focus appears to be squarely on securing another Super Bowl victory.
