The 2000s era seems to have made a resurgence, as evidenced by the continued coolness of dropping bars from Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” in everyday conversations.
Gus Johnson, the Fox Sports announcer, solidified his status as a national treasure when he seamlessly incorporated Eminem’s lyrics into his live commentary during the USC Trojans versus Louisville Cardinals Holiday Bowl matchup on Wednesday.
In the Trojans’ triumphant 42-28 victory, redshirt sophomore Miller Moss impressed in his inaugural career start, amassing 372 yards and throwing six touchdowns. With the anticipated absence of 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams, Moss had the spotlight at PETCO Park, and Gus Johnson couldn’t resist seizing the moment.
During the fourth quarter, Johnson, addressing play-by-play announcer Joel Klatt, likened Miller Moss to Eminem, stating, “Just looking at Miller Moss and what he’s done, I feel like I’m listening to Eminem.” When asked to elaborate, Johnson couldn’t resist rapping a few lines from the iconic chorus of “Lose Yourself”: “You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime.”
The deadpan delivery by Johnson added to the humor of the moment, even if it leaned a bit towards the corny side.
Contrary to Eminem’s lyrics, Moss did not miss his chance to shine and played a pivotal role in USC’s first bowl game victory since their triumph over Penn State in the Rose Bowl after the 2016 season. While coach Lincoln Riley refrained from naming Moss as the starter for the next season after the win, the young quarterback’s continued stellar performance suggests that he may have several more opportunities to secure the starting position.
