During the Christmas Day game between the Giants and the Eagles, rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito found himself benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor for the second half, a decision made by head coach Brian Daboll. DeVito’s father, Tom DeVito Sr., shared his initial confusion and thoughts on the quarterback change with the New York Post.
Initially, DeVito Sr. thought his son might be injured, as there was no communication about it. He explained, “I thought he was hurt, maybe. Maybe something happened. He usually in the past would text me from halftime if he’s hurt or something, so I didn’t get any of that. Then I just heard it like you guys did from the sideline reporter, ‘Coach’s decision.’”
Expressing his desire for his son to play, DeVito Sr. acknowledged that he was a bit perplexed by the decision, saying, “I was a little perplexed by it. I didn’t see him do anything wrong. The obvious thing was you don’t see any interceptions, so you’re like, ‘I guess I’ll find out after film.’”
The Giants’ move to Taylor was aimed at providing a “spark” to the offense. DeVito had completed 9-of-16 pass attempts for 55 yards before being benched, while Taylor contributed 133 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Despite the confusion, DeVito Sr. acknowledged the complexities coaches face during a game, stating, “Even the coaches really don’t know during the course of a game because there’s so much going on until they watch film to see, ‘Hey, he missed this, or he missed that, or that WAS his fault or WASN’T his fault.’”
Looking ahead, DeVito faces the challenge of proving himself as a starting quarterback in the NFL, especially with Daniel Jones expected to return from injury next season. While DeVito has demonstrated his ability to win, making a case for leading a team to the playoffs remains a significant task.
