Keith Hernandez is a legend.
Spending numerous hours speaking to millions of viewers each day on television broadcasts puts one at the risk of making mistakes, slips of the tongue, and unfortunate phrasing.
For Keith Hernandez, a New York Mets broadcaster, one of those unfortunate moments occurred during a broadcast on Friday night. As he waited for a pitch from Mets’ starter, Justin Verlander, during the second inning of a game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Hernandez offered some insights on hitting a baseball.
However, his choice of words turned things awkward rather quickly when he said, “You want to always be erect when you make contact.”
There followed an uneasy silence before Hernandez attempted to clarify his choice of words, saying “Like a telephone pole.” His comments caused quite a stir on social media, with many fans making fun of his cringe-worthy phrasing.
