The Sanders family’s sense of humor shines through.
Deion Sanders found himself the subject of “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update, with the long-standing cast member Kenan Thompson hilariously portraying the legendary Colorado coach. Thompson donned a white sweatshirt, hat, and “Coach Prime’s” trademark sunglasses for a spot-on impersonation.
The Buffaloes have transformed into a captivating narrative within college sports, and during the skit, Thompson and Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost good-naturedly teased Sanders for his high-profile remarks, drawing attention to his program.
While it appeared to be a light-hearted jest, one member of the Sanders family did raise some concerns. Shelomi Sanders, Deion’s daughter, found the skit amusing but couldn’t help but point out a few inaccuracies.
“It was good,” Sanders told the Denver Post. “But then it’s like, okay, they’re kind of getting him wrong.”
“The way that they were saying stuff is kind of like, all he cares about is ‘the show,’ and stuff like that. That’s not him, though.”
“Yeah, it was funny, though.”
Regarding the skit, Thompson and Jost didn’t miss the opportunity to mock Colorado’s stunning 46-43 loss to Stanford on Friday night. The Buffaloes had a commanding 29-0 lead before relinquishing it, resulting in the most substantial halftime lead squandered in college football over the past four years. This comeback also marked the largest in the history of the Cardinal.
“Wasn’t that crazy?” Thompson said. “Man, we were up 29-0 at the half. So I went home and fell asleep. I woke up this morning as shocked as anyone.”
Colorado currently stands at 4-3 with five games remaining in the schedule, necessitating two more victories to secure bowl eligibility.
The team grapples with defensive challenges and occasional offensive stagnation, but the upcoming offseason presents an opportunity to address and rectify these issues.
It wouldn’t come as a shock if SNL decides to take another humorous dig at Deion before the conclusion of the college football season.
