Not everyone who plays quarterback in the NFL becomes a millionaire, it seems.
Brock Purdy has defied the “Mr. Irrelevant” label that was pinned on him after the 49ers selected him as the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s been doing quite well since earning the starting role in San Francisco. Nevertheless, he appears content with living a relatively modest lifestyle, given that he still has a roommate and drives a rather unpretentious car.
In a conversation with Purdy earlier this year, his humility and determination to prove the naysayers wrong were evident. Many had assumed he wouldn’t make a significant impact in the NFL based on the historical performance of players dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant.” However, he has silenced his critics since taking the top spot on San Francisco’s depth chart, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, despite being plagued by an unfortunate elbow injury. Furthermore, he remains undefeated in regular season starts as the 2023 NFL campaign enters Week 5.

While it’s likely that Purdy will sign a substantial contract once his rookie deal expires, he’s currently earning $870,000 to play for the 49ers this year. Although this is not a small sum, it still falls far short of the annual earnings of most of his peers and many tech workers in the Bay Area. However, Purdy doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to burn through his earnings.
Purdy recently spoke with Today in an interview where he provided insight into his personal life. While most NFL quarterbacks don’t share a living space with an offensive lineman or drive a Toyota Sequoia, Purdy falls into both categories.
It’s quite likely that this will change in a few years, but it’s reassuring to see that Purdy doesn’t seem inclined to join the long list of professional athletes who have gone broke due to excessive spending.
Brock simply needs to take his time before he can become someone who can pass down generational wealth.
