Dak Prescott experienced a range of emotions leading up to the Dallas Cowboys’ preseason victory against the Las Vegas Raiders.
He enjoyed calling plays and leading an offense that had an impressive performance, racking up 457 yards and 28 first downs.
However, he also felt disappointed for his teammate Will Grier, who is likely to be cut from the team due to the acquisition of Trey Lance.
Prescott was not informed about the trade beforehand by owner Jerry Jones and they only spoke briefly before the game.
While he didn’t expect a heads-up, Prescott understands that it’s simply business.
He expressed his support for Grier and praised his hard work and preparation.
When asked about the trade for Lance, Prescott admitted that he wasn’t surprised due to his experience in the league.
“To be honest with you, I’m not surprised by anything anymore,” Prescott said. “I’ve been in this league eight years, been on this team, it’s hard to say I was surprised to be honest with you.”
Jones also didn’t have a complete chance to speak with coach Mike McCarthy regarding the deal.
“I can’t say that I necessarily expected it, no,” Prescott said when asked about hearing from Jones before the trade was finalized. “I understand that it’s business and I understand that they’re probably on a timeline, and they need to get something done. Like [Jones] said, he felt like it strengthens this team. Yeah, as I said, ready to welcome [Lance]. We know the strength of the quarterback room that we have. Honestly, my heart and my mind is with Will.”

He had briefly crossed paths with Lance during a marketing event.
Prescott acknowledged that the trade was a front office decision and emphasized that the team will welcome Lance and hopes he can make them better.
Prescott, who is signed through 2024, isn’t concerned about the trade affecting his contract negotiations, leaving those discussions for the office.
Coach Mike McCarthy approached Prescott about the possibility of calling plays in the preseason game, a responsibility usually given to an assistant coach. Prescott supported Grier from the sideline, calling the plays, and Grier had an impressive performance.
McCarthy commended Grier’s play and expressed his pride in him. However, Prescott downplayed his contribution, attributing Grier’s success to understanding the flow of the game and the quarterback’s strengths.
He emphasized that it was just a preseason game and didn’t want to overstate its significance.
McCarthy was pleased with Prescott’s involvement and believed it would benefit him in his preparation for the regular season.
He emphasized the importance of being actively engaged in the game and how it contributes to a quarterback’s readiness to call plays.
The pressure on Dak to win this year is mounting.
