During a game between the White Sox and the Oakland Athletics at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago on Friday night, a shooting occurred, resulting in two people being wounded.
According to the Chicago Police Department, a 42-year-old woman was shot in the leg and a 26-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet in the abdomen.
The 42-year-old victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition, while the other woman did not require medical attention.
The incident is currently under investigation, but the police confirmed that there was no active threat at the time.
“Two fans attending Friday’s game suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by bullets,” the team wrote. “It is unclear to investigators whether the shots were fired from outside or inside the ballpark. The incident continues to be investigated by Area One detectives from the Chicago Police Department. While the police continue to investigate, White Sox security confirms that this incident did not involve an altercation of any kind.
“The White Sox are thinking of the victims at this time and wishing them a speedy recovery.”
The incident occurred in Sections 161 and 162 via Fox32.
Videos posted on social media showed some spectators panicking and running away from the stadium.
Additionally, a concert featuring Vanilla Ice, Tone Loc, and Rob Base, which was scheduled to take place after the game, was canceled due to technical issues.
It remains unclear how a firearm was brought into the stadium since weapons are prohibited according to the park’s rules.
However, one fan stated that he went through a metal detector upon entering the stadium. Despite the shooting, the game continued as planned, with the Athletics defeating the White Sox 12-4.
