The NFL can be unpredictable and fast-paced.
Two years ago, the San Francisco 49ers made a bold move, trading away multiple first-round picks to secure the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
They used that pick to select Trey Lance, a quarterback from North Dakota State.
However, things have quickly taken a different turn for Lance. He is now joining the Dallas Cowboys as a backup to Dak Prescott, after the Cowboys acquired him for a fourth-round draft pick.
The trade has caused a stir, leading to San Francisco’s General Manager, John Lynch, breaking his silence on the matter. Lynch admitted it was a difficult day and took responsibility for the outcome. He expressed excitement for Lance’s future in Dallas and praised his work ethic and character.
Via Mercury News:
“Really hard day. Such a wonderful young man. We took a shot, and it didn’t work out. We own that. We take accountability for it.
I think… his story is very much unwritten. I’m excited for Trey. Dallas stepped up and really wanted him. They came after him. I think it’s going to be a great landing spot for him…
This team is ready to win, and we like our quarterback room. We like Brock Purdy a lot, we like Sam Darnold, and we like Brandon Allen. We wish Trey all the best in Dallas. We’ll always care about that young man and admire his work ethic and the person that he is.”
Lynch also mentioned the confidence they have in their current quarterback room, which includes Brock Purdy, Sam Darnold, and Brandon Allen.
While it may be disappointing for the 49ers to receive such a small return on their investment in Lance, they are focused on their goal of winning multiple Super Bowl titles with Purdy and their talented roster.
Trey Lance played a total of 8 games with the 49ers.
That is the fewest games played by a top 5 pick with the team he debuted with since the start of the common draft era in 1967.

Ultimately, they are unlikely to lose much sleep over the move for Lance in the 2021 season.
