Following the arrest of Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams on drug and weapons charges, team owner Jerry Jones made a somewhat casual response to the situation, indicating that Williams is “maturing.”
Williams was taken into custody by Frisco police on Sunday and was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. The weapons charge is considered a misdemeanor, while the drug charge is a low-level felony.
This arrest comes after Williams previously had an arrest warrant for reckless driving issued against him in January following a serious car accident in December 2022. In that incident, Williams was reportedly driving 98 mph in a 55 mph zone before crashing his vehicle.
During a discussion with reporters on Wednesday, Jones used the previous reckless driving incident as a point of comparison, suggesting that Williams has shown signs of personal growth. “I’m seeing that he is, which is more often the case than not, this sounds a little hollow, but he is maturing,” Jones said, according to The Athletic. “And he is.
What was he going, 66 mph (this year)? So, he’s 34 miles an hour less this year. Ninety-eight to 66, that’s improvement. We’ll keep working. We’ll get it down.” Additionally, Jones stated that he does not expect the recent arrest to affect Williams’ playing time this year. “I don’t anticipate this impacting his time on the field,” Jones explained, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “And I do have all the details. There are some lessons to be learned there for everybody.”

It is worth noting that Williams faced a suspension at the University of Mississippi in July 2020 following an arrest for sexual battery.
However, the charges were later dropped. Williams, who was selected by the Cowboys as a second-round pick in the previous year, played in 15 games in 2022 and recorded one forced fumble.
