Nike has announced the upcoming release of a new colorway for the Kobe 8 ‘Protro Halo’ sneakers, which have been designed by Vanessa Bryant, the widow of Kobe Bryant.
This release is in honor of what would have been Kobe’s 45th birthday.
The term ‘Protro’ was actually created by Kobe himself as a combination of the words performance and retro.
The new colorway, designed by Vanessa Bryant, will debut on August 23rd, coinciding with Kobe Bryant’s birthday.
Nike has also revealed that the Halo concept, designed by Vanessa Bryant, will now be an annual release to commemorate her late husband’s birthday.
The press release from Nike stated, “Partnering with Nike Basketball, Vanessa Bryant imagined and created the Halo shoe concept and launch as a way to honor Kobe’s birthday each year.

The updated Kobe 8 Protro features various design updates, such as an embroidered Swoosh on the upper and an embroidered Mamba logo on the tongue. Additionally, the midsole has been updated with Nike React foam for enhanced comfort and responsiveness, while the herringbone traction pattern has also been improved for better grip and performance. The Protro Halo colorway will be available for purchase on August 23rd through the SNKRS app.
In conjunction with the release, Nike will be hosting a two-day youth basketball tournament near the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the home of the Lakers, with the championship game scheduled to take place on August 23rd to honor Kobe’s birthday.
Vanessa Bryant shared a video of the announcement on her Instagram, and the design of the Protro Halo colorway pays homage to the original Kobe 8 design released in 2012.
