Former NFL player Henry Ruggs III, known for his time with the Las Vegas Raiders, has been sentenced to three to 10 years in prison for his involvement in a DUI crash that resulted in the death of a woman and her dog in 2021.
Ruggs, 24, may be eligible for parole after three years.
In May, he pleaded guilty to one count of DUI resulting in death and one count of misdemeanor manslaughter as part of a plea agreement. The judge overseeing the case referred to it as one of the most tragic she has encountered.
Ruggs expressed his apologies to the victim’s family in court, stating that he had no excuse for his actions and that they were not reflective of his true character.
“I sincerely apologize,” Ruggs said, via FOX 5 Vegas. “I have no excuse.”
The crash occurred when Ruggs was driving his Corvette at a speed of 156 mph and collided with the victim’s Toyota RAV4, causing her gas tank to rupture.
Ruggs’ blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.161, twice the legal limit in Nevada.
Another individual present in Ruggs’ vehicle also sustained injuries in the accident.
