Is Mac Jones on the way out as starting QB for the New England Patriots?
According to a prominent NFL insider, there’s an intriguing theory surrounding the New England Patriots.
Mike Florio, a well-known NFL analyst from Pro Football Talk, recently expressed his belief that head coach Bill Belichick would be pleased if backup quarterback Bailey Zappe outperformed Mac Jones.
Florio suggests that Belichick would relish the opportunity to bench Jones and send a message to his starting QB.
“I think Bill Belichick would welcome Bailey Zappe outplaying Mac Jones,” Florio stated. “It’s just my own belief…I think he would like to be able to tell Mac to go sit his a** on the bench.”
The relationship between Jones and Belichick has been a significant offseason storyline since the conclusion of the 2022 season, with reports of Belichick’s dissatisfaction with Jones’ behavior on the sidelines.
Despite Jones’ impressive performance as a rookie in 2021, his play declined noticeably in 2022, which some attribute to Belichick’s questionable decision to appoint co-offensive play-callers with backgrounds in special teams and defense.
However, Belichick has made changes for the 2023 season, bringing in Bill O’Brien as the offensive coordinator in order to provide Jones with no excuses. If Jones struggles early on, it is likely that Belichick will not hesitate to give Zappe a chance.
Zappe, who is 24 years old, won both of his regular season starts and had five touchdowns along with three interceptions in his rookie year.
The Patriots will kick off their 2023 season with a home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 10th.
