The relationship between the Indianapolis Colts and their star running back, Jonathan Taylor, appears to be irreversibly damaged. Following a meeting with owner Jim Irsay, Taylor has expressed his desire to be traded, despite having one year remaining on his rookie contract.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Stephen Holder have extensively discussed Taylor’s situation. Reports suggest that the Colts would require a high draft pick in exchange for the talented 24-year-old, although this may be difficult considering the current perception of running backs’ value in the league.
“That might be tough given the current climate about the value of running backs,” Holder said.
However, Irsay has firmly stated that the team has no intentions of trading Taylor, effectively shutting down any further discussion. Irsay further confirmed in an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer that no trades involving Taylor will occur before the trade deadline.
The tension between Taylor and the team has also heightened due to his recent placement on the Physically Unable to Perform list after ankle surgery, despite only playing in 11 games last season.
While Taylor’s performance was somewhat limited in 2022 with 861 rushing yards and four touchdowns, he showcased great potential in his first two professional seasons with 2,980 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns from 2020 to 2021.
