Just before Morocco’s defeat to Germany at the Women’s World Cup, a reporter posed an inappropriate question about same-sex relationships in Morocco.
Specifically, the reporter asked Moroccan player Ghizlane Chebbak if there were any gay players in her team and what their lives were like in Morocco, where such relationships are illegal.
“In Morocco, it’s illegal to have a gay relationship. Do you have any gay players in your squad and what’s life like for them in Morocco?” the reporter asked.
The moderator quickly intervened, deeming the question too political and redirecting the discussion to football-related inquiries. The journalist argued that the question was about people and not politics, insisting on an answer.
The exchange captured on video created an uncomfortable atmosphere.
Morocco captain Ghizlane Chebbak’s almost in disbelief reaction to the question, says it all.
A completely unethical out of line question that poses safety concerns to the players he asking to be named.
Bizarre push followed.

Following Morocco’s 6-0 loss to Germany, the BBC issued an apology for the question, acknowledging its inappropriateness and clarifying that no harm or distress was intended.
While the team captain laughed off the question, it was evidently uncomfortable for most of those involved.
