During the offseason, Trey Lance, quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has been training with Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.
“The last seven days, every day was a substantial jump,” Christensen said, according to Michael Baca of NFL Network.
“I said, ‘Watch this. Watch what he does here,'” Christensen added. “It was something I was telling him to do that he wasn’t quite doing. And then he saw Patrick apply it perfectly. And I think that visual buy-in, that mental buy-in, helped him past that mental hump.”
Lance’s private QB coach, Jeff Christensen, has been impressed with his progress, noting that he has shown substantial improvements in just the past seven days. Christensen sees similarities between Lance and Mahomes and has advised Lance to study the reigning 2022 MVP to enhance his game. Lance has only started four games in his NFL career due to injuries, but he will compete with Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold for the starting QB position in training camp.
Purdy led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game but is recovering from offseason surgery, leaving the door open for Lance to impress.
“He really fit right in,” Christensen said. “Pat (Mahomes) really thinks the world of him. He’s just a really good person, conscientious. He wants to be great. And he’s one of the few kids whose actions match his words. He backs it up. He shows up every day and he wants to learn. And that’s why I teach him.”
Christensen has praised Lance’s work ethic and dedication to improving, with Mahomes also giving him high praise. In his eight career games, Lance has accumulated 1,032 total yards and six touchdowns.
