Christian McCaffrey, it seems, has football on the brain 24/7—even on one of the most significant days of his life. The San Francisco 49ers star running back recently tied the knot with model and former Miss Universe, Olivia Culpo, but according to his coach, Kyle Shanahan, football might have still been at the forefront of McCaffrey’s thoughts during the ceremony.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Shanahan, known for his candid and sometimes humorous remarks, playfully suggested that McCaffrey was likely thinking about his game even as he walked down the aisle. “When he’s walking down the aisle to get married, he’s probably thinking about his feet and how to do routes,” Shanahan quipped. The coach quickly added that he meant “no offense to Olivia,” emphasizing just how “obsessed” McCaffrey is with football.
Shanahan went on to describe McCaffrey as being meticulous and dedicated in every aspect of his training and performance. “He’s so deliberate with every rep, every walk-through, everything he does,” Shanahan noted, highlighting the athlete’s intense focus and work ethic, which has made him one of the most respected and formidable players in the NFL.
McCaffrey and Culpo, who have been together since 2019, officially became husband and wife during the NFL offseason in June. The wedding, held in Rhode Island, was a glamorous affair, but not without its share of public scrutiny—especially surrounding Culpo’s choice of wedding dress. The bride wore a custom Dolce & Gabbana gown, which, despite being a stunning piece, sparked controversy after she told Vogue that she didn’t want to “exude sex in any way, shape, or form” on her wedding day.
Some social media users criticized the dress for allegedly lacking “personality.”
However, McCaffrey was quick to defend his wife, responding to one particularly harsh comment by saying, “What an evil thing to post online. I hope you can find joy and peace in the world, the way my beautiful wife does.” Culpo also clapped back, calling the critic a “bizarre human” and expressing how “extremely hurtful” the comments were.
This wasn’t the only time Culpo faced criticism. In July, she responded to a TikTok user who accused her of giving off “pick me vibes” after she discussed her minimal use of makeup products like mascara, eyebrow pencil, or lip liner in an interview. Culpo clarified that she was simply answering a question during the interview, brushing off the criticism with a straightforward comment: “It was an interview. They asked me what my makeup was.”
Despite the distractions and the public scrutiny, McCaffrey and Culpo seem to be navigating their new life together with the same focus and resilience that McCaffrey brings to the football field.
While his coach’s lighthearted joke about McCaffrey’s football obsession might ring true, it’s clear that both McCaffrey and Culpo are fiercely protective and supportive of one another as they embark on this new chapter of their lives.
