Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones recently discussed the team’s acquisition of quarterback Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers, stating that he sees the move as beneficial for both the short-term and long-term success of the team.
Jones expressed his belief that Lance’s arrival provides an opportunity for the Cowboys to pursue their goals and hopes to have a young quarterback who can learn and develop alongside Dak Prescott.
The Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick for Lance after he fell to QB3 in San Francisco behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.
“We view it as an opportunity that could pay dividends this year and will pay dividends (long term),” Jones said, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
Jones revealed that he wasted no time in contacting the 49ers once he learned of Lance’s availability.
“We didn’t waste any time. The minute we knew they were serious about trading him, we didn’t want the phone to hang up,” Jones said, according to Mike Leslie of WFAA. “We just made the decision almost the minute we heard the name, let’s get him.”
He mentioned that he did not consult Prescott or head coach Mike McCarthy before finalizing the deal.
“He gives us an opportunity to do what we always like to be doing,” Jones added, per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “It would be ideal for Dak (Prescott) to have a young, prospective, developing quarterback who could just be in the room and be on the team with him.”
Jones emphasized that the trade for Lance does not affect Prescott’s position as the team’s starting quarterback and downplayed the idea that it gives the Cowboys leverage in contract negotiations with Prescott.
“It didn’t cross my mind, period, about an impact here regarding Dak,” Jones said. “I know Dak wants us to do anything we can do to improve this team. We’re going to do it.”

Jones stated that the team is committed to improving and the decision to acquire Lance was made with the intention of bolstering the team’s overall talent and depth.
Although Jones praised Prescott and the current quarterback room, he expressed that he does not have high expectations for Lance in his first year with the team, stating that he does not want to rely on him heavily in the upcoming season.
“Candidly, I don’t want to plan on, count on, or wish for help from him this year,” he said.

Lance, who was drafted as the third overall pick by the 49ers in 2021, has struggled to meet expectations in his NFL career thus far. He started four games in two seasons with the 49ers and will now have an opportunity to compete with Cooper Rush for the backup quarterback role in Dallas.
The Cowboys had a successful record with Rush stepping in for an injured Prescott in the 2022 season, going 4-1.
