Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett tragically passed away in a drowning incident in Florida.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has recently released bodycam footage showing deputies responding to the incident, providing a glimpse of the water conditions and rescue efforts. Sheriff Eric Aden clarified that there were no dangerous conditions indicated at the time, despite misconceptions.
The county and Destin were not under red flags or double red flags that signify high-risk conditions.
Instead, a yellow flag was in place, which advises caution while swimming. Based on the information provided by sheriff officials, Mallett experienced difficulty while attempting to swim to a second sandbar near Gulf Shores Drive. Lifeguards promptly intervened but unfortunately, Mallett was not breathing when rescued from the water.
Mallett had a notable career in football, playing at the University of Michigan and later transferring to the University of Arkansas where he excelled in the SEC. He went on to play in the NFL for the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens, spanning five years.
Mallett was 35 years old at the time of his passing.
