While many knew him as an activist, actor, and football star, to his family Jim Brown was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

Jim Brown was a football icon through and through. He was named the greatest player of all time by the Sporting News in 2002. In 2020 he was chosen for the NFL 100 all-time team and was also ranked No. 1 on the College Football 150 list. He played for the Cleveland Browns between 1957 and 1965, leading the league in rushing eight times. Brown led Cleveland to three championships. Among his accolades, Brown was the first overall draft pick in 1957 and rushed for over 12,000 yards in his career.

After retiring in 1966, he focused on his movie career and became involved in the civil rights movement. Brown excelled not only in football, but lacrosse and basketball as well. He even served as the placekicker during a football game for Syracuse. In this game, he scored an NCAA single-game record of 43 points.

While he is remembered as a great athlete, Brown had several run-ins with the law after his football career. Despite this, he was an influential figure in the African-American community, and he founded the Amer-I-Can program to promote gang members’ transition to be productive members of society.
